Fifty Shades Of Grey by E L James

Yesterday I finished reading Fifty Shades of Grey, the book that has become a bit of a world wide sensation. It’s not the type of book I would have bought myself but a friend had finished reading it so my curiosity got the better of me and I decided to read what may one day be studied by students as a testament to our times.

I have to admit it was better than I thought it was going to be but that’s probably because I thought the media made it out to be some sort of risque sex book. It was well written, easy to follow and I like any book with so few characters. The book focuses on two main characters called Kate and Christian. The former being a nieve young woman who has just graduated college looking for prince charming to fall in love with and sweep her off her feet. The latter being a ridiculously rich guy who went through an unusual sex experience in his past which means he is far from Mr Right.

As I suspected the sex scenes were pretty tame, not that I’ve read any hardcore literature but having an idea this book involved BDSM I was surprised to find how little of that there was. What really annoyed me though was the way the author uses phrases like “touched my sex” or “down there” instead of cunt (or something to that effect). Although maybe I’m missing the point of the book and should be feeling sorry for Kate and her struggle to accept Christian Grey for who he is.

I imagine this is why the book had so much success because women read it who can relate to her struggle or maybe that they have never experienced the kind of mind blowing sex or even an orgasm the way it’s described in the book. Another thing that annoyed me was Kates constant reference to her subconscious and inner goddess which makes it sound like she has some sort of split personality disorder.

The only quote that stands out to me in this book is on page 10 by Christian Grey when he is being interviewed by Kate when he says “I don’t subscribe to luck or chance; Miss Steele. The harder I work the more luck I seem to have.”

I’m glad I read this book and it was better than I thought but that’s because I wasn’t expecting much from it. You might get more out of it if you feel like you’ve spent your whole life in a constant struggle searching for Mr Right or really just longing for a good fuck.
