Crooked Little Vein by Warren Ellis

I read this book pretty much in a day and have never laughed so hard at any book in my life. This is the first novel by Warren Ellis who usually writes for graphic novels and comics. It’s about a washed up private detective, Michael McGill who is a self confessed Shit Magnet. He goes on a quest given to him by the Whitehouse Chief of Staff to look for a lost book of the United States Constitution. The search takes him and his sidekick Trix across America encountering all kinds of weirdos and perverts on the way.

I absolutely love the style of writing in this book and between the end of chapter 12 and beginning of chapter 14 I ended up in tears with laughter. This really is the best load of hilarious bullshit I’ve ever read. It’s a shame that he has only wrote one other novel but I will certainly be reading that soon.

There are quotes aplenty throughout this novel but I don’t want to write them here for fear of ruining them for anyone who wants to read the book as they work much better in the context of the novel. There is however one that sums up Mikes misfortune:

“I’m everything that never happened to anyone else”. Mike, private investigator, page 41.

Overall: 86%
