A true classic, King Solomon’s Mines, originally published in 1885 gives an insight into the true adventurous spirit of the people living in that time. Written from the point of view of the fictitious Allan Quartermain about his adventures with Sir Henry Curtis and Captain John Good searching for King Solomon’s Mines. They cross dessert, climb mountains and end up in the middle of a battle all on their way to find the mine full of diamonds.
I think everyone should read certain classics and this is one of them. If you have any sort of imagination it will transport you into a world of ancient adventure and when you read it you will realise why this was such a best selling novel of it’s time.
Favourite quotes from the book:
“There are two things in the world, as I have found it, which cannot be prevented; you cannot keep a Zulu from fighting, or a sailor from falling in love upon the slightest provocation!” – Allan Quatermain remarking on Captain John Goods feeling towards Foulata, Page 230.
“Truly wealth, which men spend their lives in acquiring, is a valueless thing at the last.” – Allan Quartermain reflecting on life as he accepts his fate being locked in King Solomons Mine surrounded by gold and diamonds. Page 266
