Solving the Financial Success Puzzle by Gill Fielding

I received this book as a free gift for signing up to the 3 Day Property Investing Training course with Fielding Financial. The whole book aims at educating people about how to not only get their finances in order but how to become financially free.

OK first of all lets start with the negatives:

Maybe because I have read quite a few financial self help books, it didn’t seem like there was all that much new in here.

The editing is pretty bad. Or rather at first I thought it was but at the end Gill Fielding explains that it was intentional. She has broken it down so that the visual side of her book is on the left pages, and the text on right. As novel (excuse the pun) as this idea is, I found it breaks the flow of the book.

It could have also been proofread a bit more thoroughly because some of the quotes appear several times. Once the same quote was on the very next page. Then another time still it was on the same page! For me this all distracts from the content of the book.

Now the positive. If you are interested in creating financial freedom then this is a great book to start with. Chapter five explains how to put down solid financial foundations and uses the analogy of a motorway with three lanes which consist of Business, Investing and Property.

It explains the 5 steps to wealth creation (pg 85):

  1. control the flow. Limit outgoings and increase income. Uses a bath analogy.
  2. Budgeting.
  3. Managing debt.
  4. Understanding the future value of money.
  5. Taking responsibility.

It goes on to explain The seven ages of money man (pg 189) which is essentially the amount of responsibility people take for their finances:

  1. Unresponsible. E.g a prisoner
  2. Irresponsible. E.g living on benefits
  3. Semi responsible. E.g person in debt living hand to mouth. No savings.
  4. Pseudo responsible. E.g employee. Most people fit this category.
  5. Responsible. E.g more than one source of income.
  6. Macro responsible. E.g financially independent. Doesn’t need a job
  7. Immu responsible. E.g own micro economy. As solid as it gets.

The greater the independence and the greater the responsibility taken by the individual the greater the wealth will be.

Gill Fielding obviously loves quotes the way I do and I have taken some of my favourite from the book. The first one’s are Gill’s. The second ones are credited to the appropriate person:

True wealth comes when we are able to separate what we do with our time from what we do with our money. Pg 27

What the liberation of time and money creates is the opportunity to achieve success in any field – or at least aim at it. Pg 29

Use whatever money you have positively for your future rather than constantly paying for your past. Pg 117

Where you are currently is the result of the actions and decisions you have made so far in your life, and if that hasn’t created success for you, then please don’t keep doing the same things. Pg 149

The big secret to any success is,  the more responsibility we take for our actions and our progress, the more that progress becomes. Pg 189

Nothing that is desirable ever comes easy, if we put the hard work in at the early stages then we can reap the rewards forever. – Pg 207

Savings returns are a result of abdication of responsibility to a third party: a bank or building society or possibly a government. Successful returns are instead a result of responsibility, together with the acquisition of appropriate knowledge and positive action. – Pg 241

Once the belief and emotional strength is lost, so is the game. – Pg 245

What most people do is to under-celebrate the success and over-emotionalise the failure…we need to emotionalise the success, and anchor that feeling in, and downplay the failures. – Pg 245

It’s far cheaper to keep an existing customer than it is ever to get a new one. Pg 313

Nobody is indispensable and the quicker we learn how irrelevant we are then the quicker our business grows. Pg 319

What most people would recognise or identify as intuition is a result of accumulated and ingrained, repeated and purposeful practice at something so that it feels’ intuitive and you don’t have to think about it. The acceptance and practice of the skill has become so ingrained and internalised that it emerges as a belief and as an instant, gut feel rather than a processed logical thought. Rather like muscle memory, intuition is the whole body, brain and soul memory and the accumulation of evidence below the surface. Pg 369

Each peck (of a woodpecker) does not amount to much, but eventually the whole bloody tree comes down. – Page 408

If you seriously want to do something purposeful with your life you need to be able to get the money thing sorted – because only then can you focus your time on what’s important for you. Pg 431
